Some days remind us why we’ve been here for six years.
The other day, a gentleman came into The Shabby Attic with some jewellery he wanted to sell. It had belonged to his late wife. As we talked, it became clear that he wasn’t just selling jewellery. He was trying to let go of memories he wasn’t quite ready to part with.
We could have bought it. Instead, we handed it back and said, “Take a little more time. If you still want to sell it later, we’ll be here.”
Yesterday he came back. Not to sell it, but to shake our hands and bring us two cigars as a thank you. He said we’d been right, he needed more time.
Moments like that remind us that this job isn’t always about buying and selling. Sometimes it’s about seeing the person in front of you.
The jewellery can wait. Kindness shouldn’t.
